Joriki Gives Back to Kiva Charity to Help Alleviate Poverty
Here at Joriki, each one of our collections is connected with a specific charity as a part of our “Look Forward. Give Back” mantra and our Domingo Zapata Collection is no different.
In our Domingo Zapata Collection, we partnered with Zapata himself, a renowned, Spanish-American artist, to place his beautiful art onto our leggings and tops, such as our Abstract Floral Crop and “I Love You Babe” Sweatshirt.
As a result of partnering together, Zapata picked the charity in which Joriki would give a percentage of sales back to from his collection.
Founded in 2005 and based in San Francisco, Kiva is an international nonprofit organization. Their mission is to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty and to help create a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities.
How Kiva Works
Through increments of $25 or more, anyone can help a borrower start or grow a business, go to school, access clean energy or realize their potential.
Here is what the process looks like:
- Through Kiva, borrowers apply for a loan
- The loan goes through the underwriting and approval process
- The loan is posted to Kiva for individuals to support
- The borrower then repays the loan back to Kiva and the original lenders
- Lenders can use these repayments to fund new loans, make a donation, or withdraw the money
Who can get a Kiva Loan?
Kiva crowdfunds loans for borrowers in more than 80 countries who are often financially excluded and are unable to access other fair and affordable sources of credit. Kiva also loans to those in the U.S. who are either financially excluded or creating social impact in their communities.
Those who borrow from Kiva work in a variety of industries. They may be farmers, artisans, students, shopkeepers, builders or restaurant owners. Many Kiva borrowers work multiple jobs to generate enough income to support their families and are identified and vetted by the Kiva Field Partners and Trustees.
If you are in the U.S. and interested in applying for a loan, you may take a look at the application here.
- As of June 2017, Kiva has lent $1 billion and funded over 1,240,000 loans
- 81 percent of Kiva’s borrowers are female and are now in 84 different countries
- 65,000 of borrowers have gained access to clean energy because of Kiva
- There has been 28,234 education loans given out by Kiva
With the support of Joriki and other lenders, Kiva is able to make a global impact.
Why Domingo Zapata Chose Kiva
When it came to selecting a charity, both Domingo Zapata and Joriki knew they wanted to support an organization that aligned with both of their missions – global influence and women empowerment and entrepreneurship. Ultimately, with Kiva having borrowers in 84 different countries and 81 percent of borrowers being female, it was an easy decision for both Zapata and Joriki.
The Domingo Zapata Collection is very special not only because of its give back story, but also because the colors and designs in each piece of clothing are so beautiful, intricate, and unique. It’s not every day that you see Colorful Graffiti Leggings with pandas on them or a Graffiti Panda Tank with the panda saying, “Kiss Me Now.”
Joriki feels very fortunate to have been able to have the opportunity to collaborate with Zapata, and we are also very excited to see what the future holds with other amazing partners.
